Urban Sprouts Community Work Party, this month at ISA. We look forward to working with you. We will be meeting in the garden at 10am. Please come in clothes you feel comfortable getting dirty in, including long pants and closed-toed shoes.

Special thanks to Goat Hill Pizza for their generous donation of pizza for lunch for all the volunteers and to Safeway for donation of organic water, juice, and snacks.

We will have large water jugs for those of you who would like to bring a refillable water container and help us reduce plastic bottle waste.

Community Work Party

This year Urban Sprouts will be a hosting a monthly work party at each of our five San Francisco gardens. You can now join us on the 4th Saturday of every month for a fabulous morning in the garden as we:
• perform general garden maintenance

• increase your garden knowledge

• support local garden classrooms

• meet new members of the Urban Sprouts community

Each month we will be in a new garden with a new garden discussion topic. All ages and skill levels are welcome. For more information and to sign up please CLICK HERE

Urban Sprouts has been selected as a Whole Foods “Nickles for Non-Profits” recipient. Between now and September every time you bring your own reusable grocery bag to Whole Foods Franklin you will be able to donate each bag discount to Urban Sprouts. So get out, get shopping, and tell your cashier you want your donation to go to Urban Sprouts.

Summer Sprouts

Sadly, Summer Sprouts is now officially over. We ended the three week gardening and youth leadership program with a garden celebration for the family and friends of our program participants. The students showcased what they learned over the last weeks through skits, posters, snacks and games concerning topics like eating healthy, food access and soil health. This year brought many changes to our programming including a wild edibles urban hike, mountain biking in Marin with Trips for Kids, and learning from the chefs at NOPA. We are sending many of our youth leaders off to college, wishing them good fortune and hoping to hear from them again in the coming summers.

Summer Growing

After one week of training and one week of regular programming, Summer Sprouts is currently in full swing. Summer Sprouts is a summer program for middle and high school students taught in collaboration with and hosted by Garden for the Environment. This year’s program is unique due to a high volume of returning students showing interest in leadership positions. We therefore decided to alter our program and create new roles in order to strengthen the relationships we have with returning students while incorporating new leaders into the dynamic. In previous years the summer program has consisted of high school students who lead small groups of middle school students through labs and activities. This year we’ve added a whole new tier, the Jr. Staff. The Jr. Staff are paired with a senior group leader whom they help lead the younger participants with. The changes have proven to be a great success. The new challenge of mentoring a Jr. Staff counterpart has pushed the senior staff to be even better, more proactive leaders. Creating the Jr. Staff position also serves the purpose of incubating students who have shown leadership potential and train for future roles as senior staff.
