Sprout Out! is a paid after-school job readiness program for San Franciscan high-school youth looking to effect positive change in their communities through food justice, ecological gardening, and cooking. This 60-hour per semester position meets twice a week at the June Jordan School for Equity Farm & Kitchen, and at Mission Community Market. Participants will cook meals for cohort and community events, participate in hands-on farming activities and work at the farmer’s market booth at Mission Community Market selling JJSE grown plants, flowers, and products.
Join and learn:
The fundamentals of ecological urban agriculture;
Basic cooking skills and how to prepare meals using ingredients from the garden;
To develop job-readiness skills: resume writing, interview training, non-violent communication, work ethic, team building;
To increase financial capacity: open checking and savings accounts, set savings-goals, understand taxes and financial systems;
Entrepreneurial basics: farmers’ market management, marketing, customer service, public speaking, product development; and
How to advocate for equity in the food system.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
Schedule is September 9th – December 13th;
Every Monday 3:30 - 5:30
Every Thursday 3:00 - 7:00, on rotation at Mission Community Market
Participants must be San Francisco residents enrolled in high-school. This is an hourly position, $15.59/hour.
Desired Skill & Experience
An interest in gardening, social/environmental justice, food justice/sovereignty, entrepreneurship, and cooking
Demonstrated responsibility, commitment and initiative in a job, school, or other project
Strong oral communication skills or a strong desire to improve and develop these skills
Ability to work collaboratively and independently
This programs aims to cultivate an environment that is nourishing, non-threatening, and inclusive for all. Participants are expected uphold Urban Sprouts’ policies and to respectfully interact with other humans, animals, and the earth.
