In 2014 Urban Sprouts was brought in by Mercy Housing to bring our garden-based, food and environmental justice programming to the Sunnydale Community. We currently manage three sites in Sunnydale, including the Cleo Nelson Community Garden established by residents in 1997. More recently, Urban Sprouts installed two new food producing gardens in the neighborhood. Every week we attend the local food pantry and prepare a recipe using garden fresh ingredients and pantry staples. After each food pantry, we host open garden hours for the community to collect harvest free of charge. Additionally, we run our adult job readiness program out of Sunnydale, employing local residents to support the gardens.

Sunnydale is a 50-acre, 785-unit community, home to more than 1,700 ethnically diverse people. The neighborhood is undergoing a major revitalization through a private-public partnership led by the Mayor’s Office of Housing. The Sunnydale Community Gardens Project was formed to support this master plan to: increase the urban green space within the community, increase local food production, and support and grow the network of backyard gardeners.
